Have you ever encountered a homeless person on the street and wanted to help, but didn’t quite know what to do? Shreck and I encounter homeless people on a regular basis while out and about in the city. We have a heart for the homeless and we want to serve them and show them God’s love. But, we do not give them money as we do not know that the money will be used in a way that benefits them. However, we still want to help. Here is where Blessing Bags come in.
Blessing Bags are simple bags with an assortment of everyday items a homeless person might be in need of or find useful. They are a simple way to do an act of kindness for those less fortunate. When we see a person looking for money or help, we give them a blessing bag. We even made different bags for men and bags for women.
Here are the supplies we used:
- Gallon Size Zipper Bags
- Facial Tissues
- Soap (Men)
- Body Wash, Lotion & Shampoo Kit (Women)
- Feminine Products (Women)
- Toothbrush & Toothpaste Kit
- Bottled Water
- Granola Bars
- Peanut Packs
- Cracker & Cheese Packs
- Assorted Candies
We purchased the items at the Dollar Tree for $23, and made six Blessing Bags, with a few items leftover for the next batch. Then, we just divided up the items and placed them in the bags with a note reading, “We hope that the items in this bag are useful. Have a blessed day! -Mr. and Mrs. Shreck.” In future batches, we would like to include a pocket sized New Testament, but need to order them.
The people we have given these to have all seemed to appreciate the gift. One guy even came running up, afraid we would drive away before he could get to us, and he was very excited to get the bag- especially for the food items, since he was hungry and had no food. We love giving out Blessing Bags and meeting the people who receive them. It’s just one small way we can help our neighbors and show love for them.
