Happy Memorial Day! I would like to send a special thank you to everyone who has served or is currently serving in our military, and to their families for their sacrifices. You are appreciated.
Since Memorial Day is widely considered the official kick-off of summer, I have a great summer DIY project for you. This waterproof picnic blanket is quick, easy, and something that you and your family can enjoy all season! The underside uses a peva/plastic table cloth to keep the moisture from the ground from soaking through the cloth, keeping you dry for your picnic. The two cloths snap together for easy cleaning. Simply separate them to put the washable cloth through your washing machine, and wipe down the plastic side with a rag. Simple!
- Peva Picnic Table Cloth
- Fabric Table Cloth
- Sew-on Snaps
- Measuring Tape
Side note: I realize I have two different kinds of snaps shown in my photos. First, I tried the no-sew snaps that you hammer on. Impossible. Unless you already have lots of experience with no-sew snaps, I recommend you save yourself the frustration and just do a little hand-sewing with sew-on snaps. For those of you who are no-sew snap experts, I’d like to know your secret!
I found an outdoor table cloth ($4.25) and a fabric table cloth ($9) in the same size for great prices at Big Lots. This meant no cutting or sewing pieces together. I laid out both cloths, back-to-back, and marked out where I wanted to place my snaps.
I grabbed a good book (the entire series of The Chronicles of Narnia), laid out my waterproof picnic blanket, and enjoyed the sunshine and lovely light breeze. Once I decided to go inside, I just folded it up and put it in the trunk of my car. You just never know when an impromptu picnic at the park or bonfire at the beach might pop up! I recently won tickets for lawn seats to see The Lumineers, and this will be great to lounge on to enjoy the show. If it happens to rain, then we’ll have great cover, too.
